Pharmacognostic investigation of the leaves of Hydnocarpus pentandrus (Buch. -Ham)Oken
摘要
Pharmacognosy is the study of medicinal drugs derived from plants or other natural sources. According to the American Society of Pharmacognosy, Pharmacognosy is "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical, and biological properties of drugs, drug substances, or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources." The present study is of Hydnocarpus pentandrus belonging to the family Achariaceae. It includes physicochemical parameters such as total ash, water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash values, phytochemical analysis, quantitative phytochemical screening, extractive values, fluorescence analysis & thin layer chromatography. These are also necessary for the accurate identification of the crude drug Hydnocarpus pentandrus (Buch. -Ham)Oken. The leaves yield dulcitol, kaempferol, quercetin, and hydnocarpin, which are used as medicines to treat a variety of illnesses.
