Pharmacognostical studies of the leaf and stem of Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. with special reference to soil chemistry

The major focus of this study is to set standard parameters for the proper authentication and quality control of highly potent medicinal plant, Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. through microscopically and pharmaco-chemically with special reference to the soil chemistry. Microscopic evaluation reveals diagnostic structures like druses and idioblastic cells in the transverse sections. The powder microscopic studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of leaf and stem revealed distinct structural and cellular characteristics of the plant. Phytochemical screening reveals the presence of various major classes of phytoconstituents such as phenol, flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenes in the crude extract. The various proximate contents present in the plant determine its nutritional quality. UV and FTIR fingerprints were also developed for the crude extracts. The DNA barcoding reveals that the sequence was 99.62% similar to T. leucostaphylum and the soil analysis revealed the presence of sufficient micro and macro nutrients in the soil. The results of the present study provide sufficient information for the proper identification and quality assessment of T. leucostaphylum for the first time and giving an insight into future studies on this species.
