The potential of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) as antioxidant and antidiabetic agent: a bibliometric study

Sorghum is one of the carbohydrate sources that can be used as an alternative to rice. In addition to having high nutritional content, sorghum also has other advantages such as containing antioxidants, a source of fiber, and a source of minerals that are important for the body. In the field of production, this plant can also be harvested repeatedly and is resistant to extreme conditions such as drought. With these many advantages, this paper aims to provide information on the research of sorghum potential as antioxidant and antidiabetic agent that was carried out between 2012 and 2023 using the Scopus database with 520 (antioxidant) and 70 (antidiabetic) documents, respectively. Bibliometric analysis was carried out using Bibliometrix and VOS Viewer package, which were accessed using R-studio software. The findings reveal that a substantial body of research has concentrated on sorghum and its biological activities, particularly its antioxidant properties. Notably, the trend of publications concerning sorghum’s antioxidant activities has demonstrated a consistent annual increase. While antioxidants may aid in preventing or managing diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, further research is needed on sorghum for its potential antidiabetic applications. Sorghum contains a diverse array of phytochemicals, many of which contribute to its nutritional value and potential health benefits.
