A comparative account of chemical compounds in Terminalia anogeissiana Gere & Boatwr. and Terminalia pendula (Edgew.) Gere & Boatwr.

Nature mother nourishes floristic diversity including plants of medicinal importance. Present study is an attempt to compare the phytochemicals of Terminalia anogeissiana Gere & Boatwr. and Terminalia pendula (Edgew.) Gere & Boatwr. The leaves and stem were screened through aqueous, ethanol, acetone and hexane solvents. A variety of phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, quinones, tannins, steroids and terpenoids have been reported in the investigated plant parts. Ethanol leaf extract contains maximum number of phytochemicals subjected to GC–MS analysis that has indicated the presence of 58 and 84 bioactive compounds in Terminalia anogeissiana and Terminalia pendula, respectively. The compounds like Phytol acetate, Lupeol, Squalene, Stigmasterol, n-Hexadecanoic acid, Astaxanthin and Cedrol are of medicinal importance. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data has shown absorptions in the range of phenols, carboxylic acids, ester and alcohol functional groups. Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) has revealed the presence of calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and zinc in the leaves. The presence of bioactive compounds and elements (particularly in leaves) have justified the use of these species in traditional health care practices. The species or plant part to be used can be selected depending upon the requirement and availability of concerned species for sustenance of the plant diversity.
