Assessing population density and regeneration potential of Paris polyphylla Sm. in the Arunachal Himalaya, India: implications for conservation

The study focuses on Paris polyphylla Sm., a threatened plant species in Arunachal Pradesh, India, known for its medicinal properties. The population decline of P. polyphylla is attributed to unsustainable harvesting, over-exploitation, and environmental changes, including the impact of climate change. The research aims to evaluate the species' population status, geographic distribution, regeneration potential, and its correlation with the physico-chemical properties of soil. Field surveys conducted from 2022 to 2023 in five districts of Arunachal Pradesh revealed associations with 72 herbaceous species across diverse genera and families. Density was highest in Dirang (8.2 individuals/m2) with favourable regeneration status, contrasting with lower density in Baishakhi (2.48 individuals/m2). The presence of P. polyphylla across the Indian Himalayan region indicates its resilience to various environmental factors. However, despite support of the associated species, the population of P. polyphylla is dwindling. This study offers insights into community-level interactions and aids in identifying suitable ecosystems for P. polyphylla conservation in Arunachal Pradesh, India.
