Exploring the morphological and biochemical characteristics of Kharif onion (Allium cepa L.): principal component and path coefficient analysis

To determine the agroeconomic traits of onion during monsoon season, nineteen onion genotypes were evaluated under the Eastern Ghat High Land zone of Odisha. The path analysis showed that three main factors influencing onion bulb production are plant height, bulb length, and bulb diameter. Sukhasagar and Arka Niketan contributed maximum towards diversity, followed by Bhima Safed and NHRDF Red. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that first principal component explained (30.01%) of the total variation, mainly related to the number of leaves per pseudo–stem, bulb height, bulb diameter, leaf diameter, bulb predominant number of axes, whereas second component explained (20.69%) of the total variation. Bhima Raj, Arka Niketan and Bhima Red produced highest percentage of marketable bulb yield, superior bulb quality and extended storage life. Bhima Raj, Bhima Red and Arka Niketan performed better in monsoon season, which can be recommended for large-scale off-season onion cultivation.
