<p>As the transparency of information decreases, issues associated with governance become more pronounced, including obstacles to achieving environmental justice, reductions in social welfare, and increasing misinformation that affects decision-making processes. This is particularly critical in regions such as Mexico, where weak information systems and the progressive dismantling of autonomous institutions have undermined mechanisms for access to information and accountability. This article aims to describe the socio-environmental observatory information platform, developed in 2022, as an alternative approach for promoting transparency and access to information, thereby strengthening institutional governance as a pathway toward environmental justice. The framework was initially developed collaboratively by researchers and civil society organizations in response to the 2014 mining spill at the Sonora River Basin by the Buenavista del Cobre mine, one of the most severe environmental disasters in Mexico’s recent history. The article aims to: (a) describe the strategies used for the creation of the observatory and the co-production of knowledge; (b) examine how this framework could address common challenges faced by citizen and environmental observatories; (c) detail the technical and digital tools developed, such as open-source software, digital repositories, and interactive data representations; and (d) analyze how information has been disseminated to affected communities through festivals, public meetings, educational workshops, among others, emphasizing how local actors have adopted and integrated these resources into their environmental justice efforts. This information platform illustrates the potential of such initiatives to drive systemic change in regions affected by governance and environmental challenges, ultimately contributing to sustainable development by promoting more inclusive and participatory decision-making processes.</p>
