<p>This essay examines the reconstitution of the private sphere during National Socialism under the conditions of a&#xa0;radically ideologized regime, marked by systemic violence, discrimination, and the extermination of racially marginalized groups. The Second World War and the Holocaust turned family disruptions into a&#xa0;mass experience that deeply impacted notions of belonging, identity, gender roles, and the redistribution of resources within the racially defined ‘people’s community’ (‘<i>Volksgemeinschaft</i>’). Drawing on approaches from the history of society, everyday life, and emotions, as well as the histories of subjectivity and childhood, the article calls for a&#xa0;transnational and comparative perspective on the private in authoritarian orders in the “age of extremes”.</p>
