Sustainable food supply chain network design and optimization: A systematic literature review

In recent years, the design and optimization of Food Supply Chain Networks (FSCNs) have gained significant attention due to global food systems' increasing complexity and dynamism, considering not only cost and profit optimization, but also the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) of sustainability and resiliency. This research presents an extensive literature review of 77 studies published in academic journals between 2016 and 2025 on FSCNs, categorizing them into deterministic, uncertain, and Game Theoretic (GT) models. It highlights key trends, methodologies, applications within the field, and the most prevalent techniques used. This study identifies optimization models under uncertainty as the most extensively researched domain, with a growing emphasis on incorporating uncertainty related to sustainability and resiliency. This paper also underscores the dominance of agricultural products, with a notable concentration of real-world case studies. This review aims to provide valuable insights into critical variables and objectives in current Food Supply Chain (FSC) research and their optimization methods, guiding future studies toward addressing evolving challenges and limitations and enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of FSCNs.
