Mineralogy and Texture of San Gabriel Ore: Statistical Analysis of Au and Ag in Sulfides and Oxides

This research analyzes frequency histograms of gold and silver content to determine how these metals occur and are distributed within sulfide and oxide mineral species associated with the San Gabriel mineralization (Compañía de Minas Buenaventura S.A.A, Moquegua, Sánchez-Cerro, Peru). Microanalyses were conducted at the grain scale using an electronic micro-probe on two mineral samples: the first sample is sulfidic ore, and the second is oxidized ore. The primary mineralization (sulfide) occurs in a massive form, predominantly consisting of pyrite, with accessory amounts of chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite, along with negligible quantities of other sulfides and sulfosalts. The host rock for this mineralization is crystalline dolostone, which contains significant amounts of siderite. The average gold content in pyrite is 257 mg/kg, while arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite also contain notable quantities of gold, measuring 893 mg/kg and 461 mg/kg, respectively. When designing mineral and metallurgical operations, it is important to focus on the gold associated with pyrite, as this sulfide is the predominant mineral in the deposit. In contrast, silver content is significantly lower at an average of 84 mg/kg. In the oxidized ore, the average gold content is 201 mg/kg, while the silver content is less than 10 mg/kg. This indicates that leaching of both metals occurred to some extent during the alteration process.
