Lessons Learned from Panels I, II, and III Applied to Future Panel IV at Río Blanco Mine, Andina Division, Codelco Chile

Andina Division, located north of Santiago, Chile, initiated the exploitation of the Rio Blanco Mine in 1970. This paper compiles experiences acquired regarding stability problems during the development and exploitation of Panels I, II, and III of the Río Blanco mine. Panel I was exploited between 1970 and 1985, Panel II from 1982 to 1993, and Panel III began in 1995 and is projected to end in 2025. With increasing depth, geotechnical parameters changed, transitioning from secondary rock with open fractures to primary rock with closed veinlets and larger fragmentation size. This shift necessitated an evolution in the mining method from conventional block caving in secondary rock to conventional panel caving with preconditioning techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and dynamic weakening with explosives. These advancements in methods have highlighted various structural problems, including collapses and an air blast, but notably, no rock bursts due to the medium to low stress conditions in Panel III. The knowledge acquired is used to define design considerations for the new Panel IV project. These insights are essential for future mining operations to ensure safe and more efficient extraction methods.
