<p>The tendency of coal mining industries to incorporate their activities into the context of sustainability has continuously increased in recent years due to worldwide efforts to transition to a new energy mix model that targets minimizing environmental impact. A data mining and a quantitative analysis of research papers on this field were conducted to reveal the research trends of the coal mining industry’s transition to sustainability (CMITS). The Scopus database was used to elaborate the article search for 1990–2023 by classifying primary issues related to CMITS into 12 research categories. In total, 44,543 research documents were retrieved from all categories in the Scopus database. The articles were processed using the Bibliometrix R-tool by deduplicating the research documents and removing the documents with missing data. Finally, 29,760 research documents were used for further bibliometric analysis. The bibliometric research focused on the temporal evolution of scientific production, keyword analysis, authors’ collaboration, and contributions by country. The research findings were visualized with R-biblioshiny. The results showed the following: (1) There is a substantial increasing trend in the research publications on the issue of CMITS from 1990 to 2023, while the document citations started to exceed the number of publications since 2008. (2) Among the 12 research categories, some of them showed an extremely increasing trend (e.g., sustainability and circular economy and transition strategy evaluation), while others showed no trend. (3) Despite a strong emphasis on developed nations, limited research addresses strategies tailored to the unique challenges of developing and coal-dependent economies such as India, Indonesia, South Africa, and Vietnam. (4) Collaborative research networks, especially those involving China, the USA, and Australia, demonstrate the global nature of efforts to address coal mining sustainability. Finally, based on the bibliometric analysis, this study highlights the most frequently published topics regarding the CMITS and various gaps in the literature and proposes paths for future research.</p>
