<p>Mining is an important Brazilian industrial sector and, like many others, requires large amounts of energy for its operation. However, the disclosure of information within this sector, specifically related to energy, is often combined with pelletizing data, which hinders the analysis of the sector in a disaggregated manner. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the energy performance of the Brazilian iron ore mining sector from 2011 to 2020. Due to the lack of disaggregated data disclosure, primary information from the National Mining Agency was used, obtained from the regulated sector based on the submission of Annual Mining Reports. By collecting and processing individual data from each mining complex regarding the use of diesel and electrical energy, it was possible to analyze the energy consumption of the iron ore mining sector and estimate it in a disaggregated manner between the mining and beneficiation sectors. The study concluded that there was an increase in energy consumption (51%) over the period studied and identified that the majority of energy expenditure was due to the use of diesel oil. Using consolidated energy performance indicators in the mineral sector, this study found a trend of increasing energy requirements for iron ore production over the study period (33% increase in mining, 39% increase in beneficiation, and 41% overall). This trend was explained by the decline in ore grades, increased stripping ratio, and longer mean transportation distances, all of which contribute to higher energy consumption in mining and beneficiation processes.</p>
