Impact of agricultural technology adoption on food security among smallholder farmers in Ethiopia: a systematic review
摘要
Food insecurity continues to be a persistent challenge in Ethiopia. The adoption of agricultural technologies by smallholder farmers is widely recognised as a key driver of productivity and ensuring food security. Evidence on the impacts of agricultural technologies on food security outcomes remains fragmented and context‑specific. Hence, this systematic review aims to comprehensively synthesise the available evidence on the impacts of agricultural technology adoption on food security outcomes in Ethiopia. We conducted a comprehensive literature search with Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar for quantitative studies reporting the impact of technology adoption on at least one outcome related to Ethiopia between 2015 and 2025. A descriptive and narrative synthesis was conducted to summarize key findings across the included studies. Adoption of agricultural technologies was consistently related to food security compared to non-adoption, as measured by higher yields, higher earnings, greater dietary diversity, and increased resilience. The use of agricultural technology had a substantial positive impact on food security outcomes among smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. The results underscore the importance of expanding access to agricultural technologies through scaling‑up initiatives, targeted incentives, and robust policy frameworks to achieve food security and sustainable development.
