<p>Pesticides are important in perishable crops production, helping to meet the food demands of growing population. This review discusses the production and consumption of perishable crops, the various pesticides use trends, monitoring techniques, health risks associated and identifying effective risk mitigation strategies of pesticides residues while ensuring the health of consumers’ wellbeing in Ethiopia. Perishable crops that can be consumed raw or with minimal processing are particularly vulnerable to pesticides contamination. The extensive application of pesticides mainly insecticides and fungicides in perishable crops pose significant risks on human health and environment. The prolonged occupational and dietary exposures of pesticides highly influence on human health ranging from acute poisoning to chronic health risks of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic effects. To address these challenges, effective risk mitigation strategies are necessary to maintain the aesthetic and nutritional value of these perishable crops. Implementing good agriculture practices and setting the maximum residue limits are crucial for controlling pesticides residues levels in these crops. Innovations such as novel technologies, chemical and bio-wash food processing techniques can help to minimize pesticides residues in perishable crops for vulnerable consumers. Moreover, a paradigm shift towards continuously advancing pesticides residues prevention in perishable crops’ value chains and adopting a harmonized stringnent legislations globaly and localy through collaborative efforts among stockholders is vital in ensuring food safety for healthy consumption. In conclusion, ongoing monitoring of pesticides residues, development of indigenous bio-wash solutions and advanced mitigation techniques are urgently needed to safeguard the public health. Thus, the review explores the influences pesticides residues on human health and excavate the possible mitigation strategies to minimize the health risks of ubiquitous consumers.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
