Camcholate; a novel phenolate siderophore isolated from Vibrio campbellii

Siderophores play a pivotal role in bacterial iron acquisition under iron-limited conditions, predominantly in marine environment where such compounds remain unexplored. Very few siderophores have been isolated from the marine environment compared to its terrestrial counterpart. Moreover, siderophores are highly efficient drug-delivery agents, plant-growth-promoting agents, biosensors, etc., and also have high prospects in the field of bioimaging and development of nanocomposites for treatment of various ailments. The present study aims at isolating these compounds and evaluating their bioactive potential for medical and industrial applications. In this study, a novel catecholate siderophore, designated camcholate (VC-6), was isolated from Vibrio campbellii using phenol–chloroform extraction, amberlite XAD adsorption, and silica gel chromatography, and structurally characterized by HPLC, FTIR, 13C-NMR, and Mass spectrometry. The purified siderophore from V.Campbellii was identified as enterobactin; a novel siderophore compound and proposed as camcholate. The catecholate siderophore produced by Vibrio campbellii, identified as a novel phenolate compound, demonstrated non-cytotoxic effects in MTT assays against MCF-7, HeLa, and HEK cell lines as well as in situ models like Artemia nauplii and Caenorhabditis elegans, emphasising its possible application in both medical and industrial fields. This work highlights the compound’s potential applications in iron-related therapies, siderophore-based drug delivery systems, bioimaging, biosensing, and industrial biotechnology.
