A prospective evaluation on mangrove regeneration: case specific assessment from Indian part of Sundarbans

Regeneration refers to the replacement of naturally regenerated or planted mangrove species in degraded habitats, due to several unpredictable natural (Coastal bank erosion, storm surges due to frequent cyclonic storms) and anthropogenic (Agricultural expansion, aquaculture, and reclamation) issues. The primary objective is to evaluate natural and artificial regeneration (Plantation) for enhancing mangrove adaptability in the Indian Sundarbans. Plantation of monotypic species amidst the vibrant mangrove ecosystem of Sundarbans is the major drawback of plantation programme irrespective other bottlenecks. Case studies on behalf of naturally grown and planted sites have been visualized geospatially for the evaluation on sampled species composition along with structural measurements of Dorabagda mangrove patch along Matla river. Shoreline dynamics influences the regeneration capability of mangroves; if there exists no foundation due to continuous erosion, mangrove regeneration cannot be harnessed naturally or artificially. Results from six months’ field observation on basal area measurement show that Sonneratia apetala and Aegiceras corniculatum being newly appeared species and Avicennia alba is considered to be the dominant species, followed by Avicennia officinalis Insights from comparative assessment between enumerated community structures of both sites assert that Restored site supports broad range of mangrove species along with robust species-site correlation, significantly higher connectance with high dynamic ecological interactions while, Planted sites exhibit more specific and fragmented interactions along with limited species associations significantly minimal connectance. SpeciesD and SpeciesA are closer to PlantedSite4 and PlantedSite6, having higher relative abundances; SpeciesF and SpeciesG are closely associated with Restored site. SpeciesA might have stronger connections with multiple planted sites and SpeciesF might have a prominent connection and SpeciesA, SpeciesB having stronger ties with Restored site. Generalist species (SpeciesG, SpeciesE, SpeciesH) connecting to both restored and planted sites, Specialist species (SpeciesI, SpeciesB) having limited connection.
