Flood susceptibility mapping using integrated geospatial and analytical hierarchy process analysis in highly expansive Debre Markos Town, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
摘要
Effective flood susceptibility analysis is crucial for urban planning and management, particularly in rapidly developing towns like Debre Markos. Hence, this study aims to assess flood susceptibility areas in Debre Markos Town using geospatial, and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Key flood-generating factors, including slope, elevation, drainage density, and land use/land cover, were analyzed through GIS and multi-criteria AHP techniques. These factors were hierarchically weighted using the multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) approach to generate a flood susceptibility map. The results indicate that areas with low slopes, lower elevations, high drainage densities, and urbanized land use exhibit the highest flood susceptibility. Slope and elevation were identified as the most significant contributors, with respective weights of 0.56 and 0.26. The reliability analysis was confirmed with a consistency ratio (CR) of 0.067 and a normalized principal eigenvector. The flood susceptibility assessment revealed varying flood susceptibility levels in Debre Markos Town as: very low (4.21 km2), low (19.46 km2), moderate (21.03 km2), high (0.12 km2), and very high (3.91 km2). The findings emphasize the need for proactive measures, such as early mitigation strategies and urban planning interventions, to address flood susceptibility in high-risk areas and safeguard lives and property in Debre Markos Town.
