<p>Artificial Sweeteners are used world-wide as sugar substitutes, and are found in various food products and pharmaceuticals. However, their increasing occurrence in the aquatic ecosystems has raised concerns about their environmental persistence, possible bioaccumulation and potential toxicity. This review emphasises on the occurrence and toxicity mechanism of AS with special focus to metabolism, gut and neurological health and carcinogenic potential in humans. Additionally, it exhibits the ecotoxicological effects of AS on aquatic and terrestrial systems. This review also identifies and presents critical research gaps by thorough bibliometric analysis. A One Health Approach which integrates human, environmental and wild life health is essential for assessing AS risks and developing sustainable solutions to mitigate AS pollution and its long-lasting consequences.</p>
