Vitex doniana Sweet, applications and therapeutic potential: a scoping review

Despite the increasing interest in Vitex doniana Sweet, studies often focus on isolated aspects, such as specific therapeutic applications or phytochemical properties and toxicity without, exploring all parts of the plant, leading to fragmented insights. The present review provides a systematic analysis and summarizes existing literature for a comprehensive overview of its phytochemical composition, biological activities, toxicity and traditional uses. The scientific and grey literature articles were searched using databases. A set of keywords was used separately or in combination to identify original articles from studies carried out between January 2010 and May 2024. To determine their eligibility, the abstracts of the articles collected were analysed independently by two reviewers. Only original articles dealing with the phytochemical composition, biological activities and medicinal uses of the plant were considered. A total of 134 articles were collected, and 68 were selected and included in this study. The results of this review show that V. doniana contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids (58.88 to 232.55 mg/100 g), saponins (31.66 to 96.69 mg/100 g), alkaloids (173.33 to 194.75 mg/100 g), phenols (11.06 to 667.15 mg/100 g), and tannins (97.54 to 4200.67 mg/100 g). The phytochemical profile of the plant justifies its use in traditional medicine for managing various diseases including gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory problems, diarrhea, malaria, ulcers, menstrual and reproductive problems. The biological activities mainly studied include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and antiplasmodial activities. The toxicological tests using animal models have shown higher lethal doses, suggesting that V. doniana is safe for consumption.
