摘要

Purpose

The effects of different types of heterogeneity on the propagation of Love wave under an impulsive point source in a highly heterogeneous layer over a sandy rock half-space are studied theoretically and graphically.

Methods

The Fourier transform, and Green’s function technique has been applied to obtain the dispersion equation using the relevant boundary conditions at the free surface and interface of the layer and half-space.

Results

The heterogeneity of the layer varies linear, quadratic, and exponential distribution functions along with the depth. A comparative graphical analysis has been carried out by taking data corresponding to three types of sandy rock samples, namely sandstone, limestone, and marble, to better comprehend the influence of the presumed parameters on the phase velocity of Love wave through stratified Earth’s structure.

Conclusion

It is observed that the decreasing behavior of phase velocity is more apparent in sandstone than in the other rock samples. This observation underscores the unique behavior of sandstone in wave propagation, which can be crucial in assessing its suitability for various applications, including geological studies and engineering projects.
