Socio Economic and Psychological Drivers of Livelihood Diversification: A Study on Tribal Communities of Assam, India
摘要
This study is conducted to assess the influence of socio-economic and psychological factors on livelihood diversification among the tribal communities of Assam, North Eastern India. A total of 1,086 sample rural household including six tribal communities from hills and plains namely Karbi, Dimasa Kachari, Chakma, Bodo, Mising and Mech Kachari have been selected. The study is undertaken on five tribal majority districts of Assam. Both quantitative and qualitative data are collected through structured interview schedule, key informant interview, focus group discussion and observations. The study finds that the intensity of livelihood diversification varies among the hills and plains tribes, the latter being more diversified. To analyse the determinants of livelihood diversification, Tobit regression model is used. It is observed from the result of Tobit regression that along with socio- economic, demographic, geographic, and infrastructural factors, psychological factors also affect livelihood diversification. The study also reveals that impact of these factors varies between plains and hills in the study area. This study contributes to the existing literature by offering empirical evidence on the factors influencing the intensity of livelihood diversification among the vulnerable tribal communities of Assam, a dimension that remains unexplored in the context of North East.
