Inclusive Streets for Differently-Abled Students (DAS) in Arba Minch University (AMU), Southern Ethiopia

Inclusive design ensures that spaces are usable by everyone, regardless of age, ability, or circumstance, and aims to provide benefits for all. This study is aimed at designing inclusive streets for DAS in AMU by developing strategies for adapting to the physical environment. Primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 28 DAS, observations, and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with experts from the Registrar Office (Student Service Center) regarding disability and from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning regarding street design. The findings, based on data collected through key informant interviews with the Registrar Student Service Center, reveal a five-year declining trend in the number of DAS at AMU: 68 out of 17,129 in 2017, 64 out of 18,926 in 2018, 65 out of 16,002 in 2019, 51 out of 11,558 in 2020, and 28 out of 13,109 in 2021. The existing streets lacked sufficient crosswalks, and the walkways showed notable accessibility gaps—0.35 km in residential areas, 0.85 km in service zones, 0.55 km in open spaces, 0.35 km in commercial areas, and 0.85 km in administrative zones—when measured against inclusive street design standards, which recommend a maximum of 0.15 km without a rest point for each land use. Consequently, the built environment remains inaccessible to DAS, creating significant challenges in their teaching and learning processes. Recommendations and conclusions have been made to guide the design of an inclusive street.
