Background <p>It has been suggested that periodontitis is associated with hypertension. The main goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the current evidence regarding this association.</p> Methods <p>The protocol of this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251152649) and written under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. For the risk of bias assessment in the included studies, the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used. A random-effects model was used for all analyses to account for variability across included studies.</p> Results <p>Thirty-eight studies, including 992,547 patients, met the inclusion criteria. The analysis showed that having periodontitis was associated with higher odds of diagnosis with hypertension (OR: 1.38, 95% CI 1.26–1.51, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01). Severe periodontitis was associated with higher odds of hypertension (OR: 1.41, 95% CI 1.20–1.65, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01). Moderate periodontitis was linked to hypertension, resulting in a pooled OR of 1.13 (95% CI 0.97–1.32); however, this association was not statistically significant (<i>p</i> = 0.11). Presence of periodontitis was shown to be associated with higher odds of increased systolic blood pressure (OR: 1.37, 95% CI 1.16–1.62, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01). Periodontitis was also linked to elevated diastolic blood pressure (OR: 1.59, 95% CI 1.03–2.45, <i>p</i> = 0.04).</p> Conclusion <p>Severe periodontitis is associated with a higher likelihood of hypertension. Future research is warranted to focus on whether timely treatment of periodontitis affects long-term cardiovascular events.</p>

Background
