Overcoming the Burden of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: An Overview of Healthcare Professionals’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Preparedness in Osun State, Nigeria
摘要
Tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease of global public health concern, is a leading cause of death, especially in developing countries, where drug-resistant TB poses a significant challenge to global TB control efforts. However, excellent knowledge, beliefs, practices, and healthcare professionals’ (HCP) preparedness are crucial management strategies. This study aimed to evaluate public and private HCPs’ knowledge, attitudes, and preparedness (KAP) towards drug-resistant TB.
MethodsThe cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Ede and Ife regions of Osun state using a pretested semi-structured questionnaire. SPSS statistical package was used for data analysis, and a P-value of less than 0.05 was taken as significant.
ResultsThe study involved 229 participants, with Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) overall knowledge, positive attitude, and preparedness scores of 50.8%, 65.6%, and 52.2% respectively. Location (P < 0.0001; OR = 4.5), facility type (P < 0.0001; OR = 7.44), gender (P = 0.02; OR = 2.8), and training (P < 0.0001; OR = 9.2) had significant statistical effects on respondents’ knowledge. Facility type (P < 0.0001; OR = 2.6), level of education (P < 0.0001; OR = 0.3), and training (P < 0.0001; OR = 3.8) had significant statistical effects on the attitudes of HCP. Meanwhile, facility type (P < 0.0001; OR = 4.5), level of education (P = 0.03; OR = 0.4), and training (P < 0.0001; OR = 0.3) had significant statistical effects on the preparedness of the respondents.
ConclusionsTherefore, the level of MDR-TB KAP among the professionals was below excellent, and the overall outcome of this study is expected to impact policy formulation and implementation among the relevant stakeholders, which is expected to enable Nigeria to achieve the aspiration of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
