Cell-Based Therapy for Chronic Non-healing Ulcers: A Case Study of Diabetic Foot Ulcer

India has the highest population of diabetics worldwide. A common complication due to diabetes is chronic, non-healing diabetic foot ulcers that have serious health implications, including infections leading to amputations. Wound care has improved in past decades, but the majority of DFU patients have to follow tedious, long treatment procedures, especially those from low-income families.
Case PresentationThis case study explores the efficacy of a cell-based therapy using autologous blood cells in treating two patients with persistent diabetic foot ulcer.
ConclusionBoth patients demonstrated significant wound healing throughout treatment, with wound area reductions of 95% and 97%, respectively. Application of an autologous cell-based gel to the wound site resulted in epithelialization and healing. Significant wound closure was attained by both patients, indicating that conventional treatment, which has a low success rate for the DFUs, may benefit from this cell-based therapy.
