Background <p>Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by <i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</i>, primarily affecting the respiratory system but can disseminate to other organs including the CNS, bones, and lymph nodes. TB and malnutrition are leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality in low-income countries. With TB accounting for 11% of the 9 million new infections in children each year, while malnutrition is responsible for the deaths of approximately 2.2 million children under the age of five globally. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of TB in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and identify associated factors among under-five children admitted to the In-Patient Therapeutic Feeding Center (ITFC) at Specialist Hospital Sokoto (SHS), Sokoto State.</p> Materials and Methods <p>A cross-sectional study was conducted using consecutive sampling among 146 under-five children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) at the ITFC, SHS, between July and August 2024. Data were obtained from patient records and through an interviewer-administered questionnaire using Open Data Kit (ODK), and analysed with IBM® SPSS version 26.</p> Results <p>Among the 146 participants included in this study, most participants were aged 6–42&#xa0;months, with a mean age of 17.14&#xa0;months ± 7.0 SD. The prevalence of TB in the study was 5.5%. No statistically significant associations were found between TB and factors such as age, sex, low economic status, vaccination, exclusive breastfeeding, HIV infection, or place of residence (<i>p</i> &gt; 0.05).</p> Conclusion <p>This study revealed a prevalence of TB among malnourished under-five children admitted in ITFC, however, no statistically significant associations were found between TB and any specific factors. In general, Strengthening integrated TB prevention, screening, and nutritional rehabilitation strategies is recommended for timely detection and decrease the overall burden of childhood TB and paediatric malnutrition in this vulnerable population in Nigeria.</p>

Materials and Methods
