Determinants of Patient Satisfaction in Outpatient Mental Health Services: A Cross-Sectional Study at a Tertiary Psychiatric Hospital in Oman
摘要
Oman has made significant strides in transforming its mental health services; however, patient satisfaction remains a pressing concern amid ongoing reforms. This study aims to explore patient satisfaction with outpatient mental health services and identify the factors influencing these satisfaction levels.
MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted at Al Masarrah Hospital over 6 months from January to July 2024, utilising the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ-18) with a sample of 367 participants aged 18 and older who received follow-up care. Data were analysed using SPSS, and standard deviations and mean scores were reported among the seven subscales of the PSQ-18. Parametric statistical tests, including the student’s t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA), were employed to explore associations and identify determinants between the independent variables and the mean scores of the PSQ scales.
ResultsOut of 367 participants, the majority were aged 24 to 44 years (59.7%), male (58.9%), college-educated (64.6%), and employed (71.1%); however, 48.8% reported inadequate salaries. The diagnoses included schizophrenia (24.3%) and depression (19.1%). Notably, 37.3% had received treatment for less than a year, and 76.6% were taking four or more medications. Additionally, transportation barriers were reported by 52.6% of participants, and 21.5% indicated substance use. The average satisfaction score was 40.66, with 59.1% expressing low satisfaction. Higher satisfaction was linked to treatment durations of less than one year (mean = 41.70, p = .042) and previous hospitalization (mean = 40.56, p = .021).
ConclusionThis study reveals that patient satisfaction with outpatient mental health services at Al Masarrah Hospital is generally low, with more than half of the participants expressing dissatisfaction. Higher satisfaction levels were linked to shorter treatment durations and prior hospitalizations. To boost patient satisfaction, mental health services in Oman should prioritise timely engagement, address structural barriers such as transportation, and enhance the continuity and quality of care, particularly for long-term service users.
