Asthma and Stroke: Unraveling the Link Between Inflammation and Vascular Health

Asthma and stroke are generally perceived as unrelated health conditions; however, emerging research suggests a noteworthy association that warrants further investigation. Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder marked by airway inflammation and breathing difficulties, often influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental factors. In contrast, stroke results from a disruption of blood supply to the brain, typically caused by underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Despite these differences, growing evidence highlights a potential link between the two, primarily through mechanisms involving chronic inflammation. Individuals with asthma often exhibit elevated levels of systemic inflammatory markers, which may contribute to vascular damage and an increased susceptibility to stroke. Additionally, certain asthma treatments, including β2-agonists and corticosteroids, have been implicated in cardiovascular effects, raising concerns about their potential role in modifying stroke risk among asthma patients. This review explores the relationship between asthma and stroke by examining shared inflammatory pathways, the impact of asthma medications on cerebrovascular health, and the broader implications for clinical management. A deeper understanding of these connections could enable healthcare professionals to adopt a more preventive approach when treating individuals at risk. Moving forward, additional studies are essential to clarify the specific biological mechanisms underlying this association and to develop targeted strategies for reducing stroke incidence in individuals with asthma.
