Serum Zinc Levels in Women with Preterm Premature Rupture of the Membranes (PPROM) in Uncomplicated Pregnancies

The association between serum levels of zinc and preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) has not been sufficiently explored, and the results of existing studies are controversial. This case–control study aimed to determine the impact of serum zinc levels on the PPROM in pregnant women. One hundred pregnant women from 2019 to 2020 were included in the study. They were divided into two groups, each consisting of 50 individuals, with and without PPROM The measurement of zinc levels was conducted using a biochemical analyzer and photometric method. The serum levels of zinc were examined and compared. In women with and without PPROM, the mean age was 30.2 ± 7.5 and 29.1 ± 5.7 years, respectively (P = 0.543). The mean gestational age was 33.21 ± 1.5 and 39.2 ± 1.2 weeks (P < 0.001), and the gravid was 1.7 ± 0.7 and 1.7 ± 0.6 (P = 0.833), respectively. The mean serum zinc levels were 76.8 ± 13.8 and 90.2 ± 23.2 mg per liter (P = 0.001). A positive and significant correlation was observed between serum zinc levels and maternal age (P = 0.003, r = 0.290). However, no significant association was found with a history of abortion, PROM history, supplement consumption history, age, and gravida. Low serum zinc levels appear to be associated with PPROM in pregnant women and premature labor. However, further studies with a larger sample size in this area are suggested to strengthen these findings.
