Sustainable advances in the cellulose pulp industry: a biotechnological and market perspective

Wood biomass is a main renewable resource extensively used in the pulp and paper industry. Globally, these industries extract vast quantities of wood, amounting to thousands of billions of cubic meters, resulting in a substantial flow of woody biomass across many countries. Lignocellulose, the primary component of woody biomass, is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and the highly recalcitrant lignin. High-quality paper production relies on bleaching processes, where physicochemical treatments are used to remove or significantly reduce the brown coloration caused by residual lignin in cellulose pulp. However, in recent decades, the incorporation of biologically based technologies has emerged as a key strategy to optimize production processes, minimize environmental impact, and promote more sustainable practices. In this context, lignin-modifying enzymes have gained attention for their potential advantages from environmental, economic, and commercial perspectives. This review provides an overview of the market landscape of the pulp and paper industries, and how the sector behaves and evolves in the marketplace, including a trend analysis, with a particular focus on the sustainable application of lignin-modifying enzymes. This information enables the assessment of the worldwide relevance of the pulp and paper industries.
