Exploring bryophyte-microbe interactions for symbiosis and natural product discovery: an overview

Plant microbiome, which includes microbes associated with rhizosphere, phyllosphere and endosphere of plants, is an integral part of the holobiont. Recent reports have divulged the role of plant microbiome in plant health and fitness. While reports of plant-microbe interactions exist in all major taxonomic groups of the plant kingdom, our understanding of plant microbiomes has mostly come from studies conducted on angiosperms or flowering plants. However, in spite of being second to angiosperms in terms of diversity, bryophytes (and their microbiome) represent a highly understudied taxonomic group. Including the liverworts, the hornworts, and the mosses, bryophytes are the only terrestrial plants with a dominant gametophytic phase and lack of vascular system. These plants are consequently limited in their vertical growth, staying closer to the soil surface to obtain water through osmosis. As natural soils are considered the most biologically diverse environment on Earth, interactions between microbes in these soils and bryophytes are surely worthy of study from both basic and applied perspectives. Further, since bryophytes are most closely related extant relatives of the first terrestrial plants that inhabited the Earth, investigation of the unique microbiome can illuminate bryophyte-microbe functionality and their putative role in larger ecosystems. This review provides an overview of the bryophyte-microbe associations, which is crucial for both fundamental and applied research. Such symbioses can be prospected for desirable agronomical, ecological, and pharmaceutical applications.
