Evaluation of land degradation vulnerability in coal mined areas of Madhya Pradesh, India using geospatial and AHP modeling: a 40-year assessment and eco-restoration of degraded landscape
摘要
Coal is the primary source of energy in India mainly harnessed for thermal power generation, accounting for ~ 27% of the global energy needs, while India heavily reliant on coal delivers ~ 70% of the energy needs of 1.4 billion population through coal. Large-scale anthropogenic coal mining is one of the main causes of deforestation in India, which increases the nation's susceptibility to land degradation and results in a significant loss of native land cover. This study investigated impact of coal mining on land use, change detection and degradation pattern of Singruali coal-mining region of Madhya Pradesh, India, employing geospatial and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) modeling. The satellite data corresponding to 1984, 2004, and 2024 were digitally classified using maximum likelihood algorithm. Spatio-temporal satellite data analysis revealed that an area encompassing ~ 51.07 km2 of forests and ~ 33.39 km2 of cultivated land was lost due to the expanse of mining between 1984 and 2024. Consequently, the overburden dumps and degraded land (coal mine) accounting 53.92 km2 and 17.16 km2 respectively, rapidly expanded during past 40 years. Coal mining has resulted in the loss of vast tracts of forest and agricultural land, while a significant amount of the overburden has been restored with plantings, leaving a tiny area unusable for further mine expansion. Land Degradation Vulnerability Index (LDVI) has drastically increased with expansion of mining from 1984 to 2024. LDVI map showed that mined area was highly vulnerable, followed by forest, and cultivated land, while destructive mining and other associated activities in the past 40 years have made 47.32% of the landscape vulnerable. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of decadal changes in land use and land degradation vulnerabilities and inferences of effective eco-restoration aimed at fostering resilient ecosystems to achieve zero net land degradation in coal-mined regions by 2030, in alignment with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
