Bean cultivation to assess the fertilizing potential of anaerobic digestate from fruit and vegetable wastes: a comparative field study

This study demonstrates the fertilizer value of raw digestate (RD) and stabilized digestate (SD) from fruit and vegetable wastes (FVW) in comparison to compost tea (CT) and FVW tea (WT) for bean production. Germination index results indicated that diluted RD (124.5%) and CT (131.8%) had comparable fertilizing effects, whereas WT remained phytotoxic (50%). RD showed high nutrient content, with nitrogen (1.74 g/L), phosphorus (0.62 g/L), and potassium (1.18 g/L), leading to improved growth and yield parameters in common bean cultivation, surpassing CT and SD treatments. The stabilization of RD effectively increased organic matter mineralization while it lowered ammoniacal nitrogen levels. Field trials, conducted to investigate the potential use of RD as a fertilizer in common bean cultivation, showed that RD and CT + SD mixture applications significantly improved trifoliate leaf number, root length, and flower number, similar to the effects of CT. RD also resulted in increased seed yield and sugar content, highlighting its fertilizer potential. In fact, RD treatment resulted in a 71% increase in seed yield per plant, while CT + SD mixture application only provided a 28% increase compared to the control. Additionally, RD-treated plants presented the highest sugar content in seeds (10.63° Brix). These findings suggest that FVW digestate is a promising alternative to synthetic and traditional organic fertilizers, supporting sustainable agriculture and closed-loop food production. Future research should focus on long-term monitoring of metal accumulation and the effect of digestate on soil fertility to ensure its safe and effective use in agricultural systems.
