Colletotrichum siamense: the causal agent of guava anthracnose in Mauritius

Guava is a widely distributed tropical fruit known for its exceptional nutritional value and traditional medicinal applications. However, it is vulnerable to post-harvest diseases, particularly anthracnose. This study involves the characterisation of Colletotrichum spp. as the pathogenic agent responsible for anthracnose in guava fruits collected from Gros Billot, Vacoas, and Wooton during 2024 and 2025. Morphological characterisation revealed white colonies with orange-spore masses, and unicellular, cylindrical, and round-ended conidia. Molecular identification, through the sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene regions, confirmed the fungal pathogen as C. siamense, showing 100% sequence similarity with reference strains in GenBank. A pathogenicity test confirmed the identity of the pathogen, being C. siamense, with the successful re-isolation of the pathogen from inoculated guava fruits. This study marks the first report of C. siamense as a causal agent of guava anthracnose in Mauritius.
