<p>Composting is a sustainable waste management practice that converts biosolid wastes into organic manure. One way to successfully achieve the composting process is by using cattle dung as the source of microbial inoculum to facilitate the process. However, the availability of cattle dung is a problem in many regions, especially in urban areas. As an alternative, a consortium of <i>Bacillus subtilis</i> and <i>Gongronella butleri</i> impregnated in coirpith as carrier material has been developed. The most crucial aspect of the composting inoculum is the survivability of the microbes in the carrier material, which determines the shelf life of the microbial consortium. The present study was aimed at determining the shelf life of the <i>B. subtilis</i> and <i>G. butleri</i> consortium based microbial inoculum in coirpith as a carrier material. The study was conducted for five months using 40% and 20% microbial consortium in coirpith-based inoculum. The present study showed that coirpith-based microbial inoculum (40% concentration) containing <i>B. subtilis</i> and <i>G. butleri</i> could be stored up to 4 months with sufficient population of microbes.</p>
