Current status of viral and phytoplasma diseases of black pepper
摘要
The review discusses the significant impact of viral and phytoplasma diseases on black pepper, an essential spice crop predominantly cultivated in India and other countries. Plant viruses pose a major challenge, primarily because black pepper is propagated vegetatively. This propagation method facilitates the rapid spread of viruses, making viral disease a critical yield-limiting factor. Diagnosing viral infections based solely on symptoms is ineffective due to the lack of distinctive indicators. Additionally, the absence of sensitive detection methods has contributed to the widespread distribution of viruses in all regions where black pepper is grown. Recent advancements have led to the identification and characterization of viruses and phytoplasma infecting black pepper and the development of sensitive diagnostic tools. Effective management of viral disease in black pepper involves an integrated approach that includes the production and use of virus-free planting materials, vector control, and cultural practices. Rejuvenating virus-affected black pepper plantations through proper soil and plant health management has succeeded.
