Impacts of climate change on pathogens and diseases of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Apparent changes in climatic parameters like temperature, CO2, intensity and distribution of rainfall coupled with frequent occurrences of climate extremes have significantly impacted the crop growth, disease scenarios and grain yield in rice. Several diseases such as false smut, panicle blast, bacterial leaf streak and bacterial panicle blight (Burkholderia glumae) have emerged as an important production constraint in some rice growing regions of India and abroad. Global warming impacts various components of integrated pest management, including host-plant resistance, bio-pesticides and chemical pesticides. Management of rice diseases through identification of novel fungicides and development of rice cultivars possessing resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses coupled with new climate-resilient bio-agents and suitable agronomic practices will help in sustaining the rice yield. In this article, possible effects of climate change on rice pathogens and diseases caused by them are discussed along with disease management strategies to enhance crop production and ensure food security in a changing climate.
