Relative effectiveness of newly developed liquid bioformulations of Trichoderma isolates against Alternaria brassicicola on Indian mustard

The causal agent of Alternaria blight or leaf spot, Alternaria brassicicola, is a highly destructive fungal pathogen in all mustard-growing regions of the world, especially in India. To manage this disease sustainably, two newly developed novel emulsion-based liquid bioformulations of Trichoderma harzianum AMUTH-1 and T. viride AMUTV-3 were explored under field conditions on mustard crop. The relative effectiveness of the bioformulations was compared with pure cultures of T. harzianum AMUTH-1, T. viride AMUTV-3, Pseudomonas fluorescens AMUPF-1, a commercial formulation of T. viride (Alderm™) and a fungicide (mancozeb) against A. brassicicola. Inoculation of A. brassicicola caused severe damage to mustard plants with 4.41 disease index (0–5 scale) and 36–40% reduction in plant growth and 36–47% in yield. However, foliar treatment of T. harzianum AMUTH-1 and T. viride AMUTV-3 bioformulations resulted in a significant increase in the plant-growth parameters (13–18%) and mustard yield (14–39%), and decreased the blight severity (47–52%) and phylloplane population of A. brassicicola (58–61%). The bioformulations significantly suppressed the disease compared to non-formulated Trichoderma isolates, and their effect was comparable to the mancozeb and better than the Alderm™. Foliar application with these bioformulations efficiently protected mustard plants from leaf spot pathogen without any adverse effect on the environment. Hence, the newly developed bioformulations of T. harzianum AMUTH-1 and T. viride AMUTV-3 could be used as an independent or a component of an integrated disease management module against A. brassicicola on the Indian mustard crop.
