<p>Rice is one of the important cereal crops, serving as a staple food for more than half of the world population. Sheath blight caused by soil-borne necrotrophic pathogen, <i>Rhizoctonia solani</i> Kuhn, is one of the most dreadful diseases in rice ecosystem leading to significant yield losses worldwide. Breeding resistant rice varieties, is an eco-friendly way to combat sheath blight. Unavailability of complete source of resistant is a major drawback for development of resistant varieties. Considering the necessities for source of resistance lines in the breeding programme, field screening of 512 rice genotypes (traditional varieties, landraces and released varieties) was done during the <i>Kharif</i> season 2020–21 and 2021–2022 in Rice breeding station, V.C. farm Mandya. Only one genotype RL 721 showed resistance and 27 rice genotypes were found with moderate resistance against sheath blight. A total of 28 rice genotypes were selected to carry out the association studies on fourteen morphological traits. A negative correlation of plant height, flag leaf length, flag leaf width, and stem thickness, was found with sheath blight severity while a positive correlation was observed with tiller number. Traits like thick leaf, thick sheath, spreading type tillering habit, high stem breaking resistance, erect flag leaf attitude, and medium to high roughness on leaves were found to be associated in resistant genotypes as pre-existing defensive morphological traits<b>.</b> These results highlight the role of morphological traits in reduction of disease severity and suggest potential donor genotypes for sheath blight resistance breeding. In order to improve sheath blight resistance while maintaining agronomically desirable traits and aim of sustainable rice production, this research offers important insights for breeding programs.</p>
