Temperature driven expression and cross-host transmission associated with Bemisia tabaci vectored cotton leaf curl virus

Virus diseases significantly damage cultivated plants and reduce the marketable quality of produce. Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) has been recognized in India for the past three decades. The leaf curl epidemic arises from a complex tripartite interaction between the host plant, vector and the virus. Climatic conditions, particularly variable seasonal temperatures, play a crucial role in the progression and severity of the viral diseases making temperature a key factor in driving virus epidemics. Assessment of leaf curl seasonal dynamics under variable thermal ranges showed that temperature in the range of 30–35 °C is the most suitable for virus transmission, multiplication and symptom appearance. Cross-infection of cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV) from cotton to okra does not produce any visual symptoms. However, analysis using rolling circle amplification (RCA) detects the presence of the virus in low titers in cotton plants. Conversely, when okra yellow vein mosaic virus (OYVMV) crosses from okra to cotton results in no visual symptoms and the virus remains undetectable by both PCR and RCA methods.
