<p>In June 2022, chilli fruits exhibiting putative anthracnose symptoms were collected from Bois d’oiseau and Brisée Verdière, Mauritius, where the disease incidence ranged from 80 to 100%. Isolation of fungal pathogens from lesions on the chilli fruits led to recovery of colonies with light grey colour and an off-white margin on PDA medium. The five isolates characterized had unicellular, straight, cylindrical conidia with one rounded end and one narrowly acute end. The fungal spores of the isolates were 10.6 to 20.1 × 2.3 to 4.5&#xa0;μm in size and the fungal mycelium growth rate medium was 4.0 to 8.0&#xa0;mm per day. ITS, GAPDH and TUB2 gene sequences indicated that the isolates were <i>C. scovillei</i> with 99.51 to 100% identity to sequences in GenBank database. Obtained sequences were deposited in NCBI database under the following accession numbers: OP412472 to OP412478 (ITS), OR188774, OP188775, OR365287 to OR365291 (GADPH) and OR466683, OR475572 to OR475581 (TUB2). A pathogenicity test confirmed that <i>C. scovillei</i> was the causative agent of chilli anthracnose. In light of morphological characters collected and molecular identification results obtained, the fungal isolates were identified as <i>Colletotrichum scovillei</i> which was reported for the first time causing chilli anthracnose in Mauritius.</p>
