Morphological and molecular characterization of fungi associated with tea (Camellia sinensis L. Kuntze) blister blight disease isolated from Darjeeling tea estates, India

Tea (Camellia sinensis L. Kuntze) plantations are affected by a wide range of fungal pathogens and pests. Blister blight is one of the most important diseases in tea plants. In this study, we explored six tea estates across Darjeeling. This study aimed to identify fungi associated with sporulating lesions of blister blight on tea leaves in tea varieties planted in these six tea estates across Darjeeling. A total of 21 distinct fungi were isolated from the sporulating lesions of the infected tea leaves using a traditional culture-based method. Based on cultural morphologies, the fungal isolates clustered into 13 groups. Most isolates (61.9%) grew up to 7 days with an average growth rate ranging from 0.028 ± 0.013 to 0.050 ± 0.008 cm/h. Molecular characterization revealed that the isolates belong to the genera Pestalotiopsis, Neopestalotiopsis, and Nigrospora.
