<p>In this commentary paper, we take as a starting point one of our earlier articles that was published in this journal in 2014, identify some of the challenges we still wrestle with in theorising the central construct in that paper—collective mathematical understanding—and share some of our current and ongoing work in this area, in particular the ways in which we are drawing on the metaphor of pollination.</p>
