Impact of Breaking Bores on Moored Structures

When a breaking bore advances in a canal, the turbulent roller interacts with natural landforms, man-made structures and vessels. While motivated by the well-documented impact of tidal bores on navigation and harbour facilities, the present study is relevant to other physical and industrial processes, including in-river tsunami and storm surges, and compression surges in hydropower canals. Some physical modelling was conducted in a relatively large-size physical facility, with a 19 m long 0.5 m wide test section. Moored vessels were suspended in the channel, and the breaking bore impact was documented on two types of vessels, i.e. a caisson and a barge, for a range of hydrodynamic conditions. The experimental observations showed a complicated transient process during the initial stages. The measurements were repeated and the quantitative data sets’ ensemble statistics were analysed. Following the initial impact, the instantaneous vessel velocities were smaller than the bore celerity. The measurements of traction force on the suspension rods indicated a time-variation of the horizontal and vertical components consistent with the visual observations.
