Analytical Insights into Drug Evaluation in Wastewater Using Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography: A Review of Current Progress and Challenges

The increased use of pharmaceuticals is contributing to the contamination of ecosystems. For this reason, detecting and analyzing pharmaceuticals in the environment has become a priority research area. Liquid chromatography is one of the most commonly used techniques for this purpose. In wastewater analysis, reversed-phase liquid chromatography is predominantly applied, though it has certain limitations. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), on the other hand, offers high separation efficiency and the ability to resolve natural and synthetic substances with multiple functional groups, making it uniquely valuable. This review provides a focused discussion on current analytical methods for detecting pharmaceuticals in wastewater, emphasizing the advantages of HILIC compared to conventional LC and MS approaches. Unlike previous reviews that address HILIC in general bioanalysis, this is the first review dedicated specifically to its application in wastewater analysis. The objective is to summarize existing HILIC strategies for pharmaceutical detection in water and wastewater, and identify current challenges and future research directions.
