<p>To assess the safety of canned fish consumed in Nigeria and enhance the understanding of its risks and benefits, it is essential to determine contaminant levels, including organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) in it. Thus, this study aims to evaluate human exposure to organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) in some brands of canned fish available in the Nigerian market. A total of twenty-one (21) different brands of canned fish consisting of nine (9) brands of sardine, five (5) brands of tuna, and seven (7) brands of mackerel were purchased from supermarkets in Warri, Nigeria. The OPPs in the samples were quantified with a gas chromatograph coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after soxhlet extraction with dichloromethane/hexane/acetone. The concentrations of ∑14 OPPs in the sardines, tuna, and mackerel ranged from 3.71 to 8.08 ng/g, 1.98 to 2.94 ng/g, and 1.12 to 3.16 ng/g, respectively. The estimated dietary intake based on the concentration of the ∑14 OPPs ranged from 1.55 to 11.2 ng/kg bw/day for children and 0.39 to 2.80 ng/kg bw/day for adults. The computed hazard index (HI) values were generally &lt; 1 and indicated no adverse non-carcinogenic risk from OPP ingestion in these brands of canned fish.</p>
