Assessing the Environmental Impact Due to the Influence of Tannery Effluent on Water Quality

This study assesses the impact of treated tannery effluent on physicochemical parameters and string catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis) morphology. Effluent concentrations (2–15% v/v) were mixed with aerated tap water and exposed to catfish for varying periods (0–45 days). Results show significant increases in turbidity, TDS, EC, TH, BOD, COD, chloride, nitrate, and nitrite with increasing effluent concentration and exposure time. Conversely, dissolved oxygen levels and catfish body weight decreased. The findings highlight the potential toxicity of treated effluents on aquatic environments and emphasize the need for strict monitoring and control procedures. This study provides valuable insights into the joint toxicity of chemical pollutants in aquatic environments, underscoring the importance of assessing treated effluent toxicity on receiving water bodies. The results have implications for environmental management and conservation of aquatic life, particularly in regions like Kanpur, where the leather industry significantly contributes to pollution. Effective management strategies are essential to mitigate the adverse effects of tannery effluents.
