Validation of a Simple and Rapid Method for Simultaneous Analysis of Alcohols in Alcohol-Based Hand Rubs: Application for the Assessment of Products Sold in the Tunisian Market

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, public awareness around hand hygiene in the prevention of virus transmission has grown and resulted in an increase in the demand for alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR). Consequently, the production of hand sanitizers escalated, raising the threat of “counterfeit brands” and unregulated ABHR manufacturers within the market. Thus, this unwittingly results in inefficient hand hygiene and an increase in virus proliferation and potential mutagenesis. This threat continues due to the adoption of hand sanitizers as part of the daily hygiene routine. In this paper, a rapid and efficient analytical method was proposed for the simultaneous determination of Ethanol and Isopropanol in ABHRs by Head space -gas chromatography (HS-GC-FID). The method was then validated and applied for the quality assessment of 30 ABHR samples, purchased from Tunisian markets. The results have shown that the new method has a satisfactory limit of quantification of 10%. The specificity, linearity, and accuracy of the method were demonstrated. The results of the product assessments indicate that ethanol was present in 57% of the tested samples and isopropanol in 40%. The measured alcohol percentages ranged from 13.65 to 80.89% (v/v). Among the studied samples, 33% contained less than the WHO required alcohol concentration and one sample showed the presence of methanol, raising safety concerns for the continued use of unmonitored products. These results highlight the importance of the application of continuous quality control of ABHR in order to limit the risk of consumer exposure to non-compliant and potentially hazardous products.
