ZnO obtained from spent alkaline batteries as photocatalyst for carbamazepine degradation
摘要
The consumption of alkaline batteries is an environmental problem due to their final disposal. Zinc, one of its main components, can be released by the attack of climatic agents, leaking through the soil until it finally reaches surface water courses and aquifers, polluting the environment. Obtaining ZnO from spent alkaline batteries by hydrometallurgical processes can help to minimize this harmful action. In this work, ZnO-based materials were obtained from battery waste using two different leaching reagents, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, and two calcination temperatures, 400 and 550 °C. The materials were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Raman and Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopies, and High Resolution-Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The zinc oxide photocatalytic activity was studied for the degradation of an emerging contaminant using UV-A light as an irradiation source. ZnO obtained using hydrochloric acid as a leaching agent completely degrades carbamazepine after a 3 h exposure to UV-A light. This proceeding meets a double objective against environmental pollution through an eco-friendly process. On the one hand, by recovering metals from exhaust batteries, the proposed treatment prevents their leaching into the soil. On the other hand, the photocatalytic properties of the new obtained materials are able to remove an emergent contaminant from water.
